What To Expect During Your First Dental Visit

Are you nervous about going to the dentist, especially when it’s your first time seeing a new dentist? There’s no need to worry, the dentist and the staff are there to help you get the care you need — and feel as comfortable as possible.

Here’s what you can expect to happen at that first visit, so you can feel more relaxed:

  • The dentist will probably want to see your health history, in case there’s a condition or issue they need to know about that might affect your dental care.
  • Your dentist will take a close look at your mouth, teeth, and gums to find out if you have any signs of a problem that need preventive care or treatment.
  • You might need to have X-rays to look for a dental issue that’s not easily noticed or visible, such as an abscess or fracture inside a tooth. Dental offices use X-ray machines that put out a very low amount of radiation – about the same amount or less than if you spent a day in the sun. Also, you’ll wear a lead apron to protect you.
  • Most visits to the dentist include a cleaning from either the dentist or a dental hygienist. They will remove plaque or tartar that can lead to bad breath, cavities, gum disease and other issues.

After that first visit, you should schedule your next appointment. If you need treatment such as filling a cavity or fixing a crown, try to set up a visit as soon as possible to prevent further problems — and unnecessary pain.

Otherwise, you can probably return in about six months for a checkup and cleaning. A little preventive care goes a long way to keeping your teeth clean, healthy and trouble-free!
