When gum disease develops, the body deposits a mineral layer under the gums. This layer is called tartar. Tartar causes the gums to become swollen. The first step in treating the gum disease is to remove this layer of tartar. The procedure for removing tartar is called Scaling and Root Planing and is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. The periodontal team at Southfield Family Dental center provides a very thorough and very gentle scaling and root planing treatment.
Your teeth and gums are very important to us here at Southfield Family Dental Center. We dedicate ourselves to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is associated with heart disease and our entire staff cares about your health and well-being.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum and bone around the teeth. It is caused by the germs in your mouth. The first stage is when the germs infect the gums only and it is called gingivitis.
Gingivitis is an infection of the gums only. This may cause the gums to become red and swollen and may sometimes lead to bleeding during tooth brushing. Over time if the gingivitis or gum disease is left untreated, then the infection goes deeper and infects the bone around the teeth. At this stage, it is called periodontitis.
Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease. Early gum disease causes the gums to pull away from the teeth. This leaves deep pockets where plaque and bacteria can build up. Periodontitis can progress until the bones that support the teeth are damaged. Teeth may get loose and fall out or need to be removed. In most cases, people do not realize that they have the infection because it doesn't hurt. By the time it does hurt, it's usually too late to save the teeth.
