How Many Times a Day Should I Floss?

November 12, 2017

Most people should brush and floss twice a day. There are a number of advantages that come along with flossing your teeth regularly, including:

Reduced Bleeding From the Gums

Bleeding gums may be an indicator of periodontal disease, and those who floss twice daily tend to bleed less than those who floss once a day or less. In fact, a study of twins revealed that the twin who flossed twice a day had significantly less (about 38% less) gum bleeding than the twin who flossed once a day. The difference was obvious in only a short-term study, so the long-term benefits may be even better.

Reduced Plaque Accumulation

Regular flossing prevents the soft and sticky bacteria known as plaque from accumulating on the teeth. If plaque is left on the teeth, it will grow hard and turn into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist using specialized tools.

Less Tooth Decay

Brushing and flossing can help you prevent periodontal disease -- and even tooth loss. Flossing can reach the tiny particles of food and debris that get lodged in the nooks and crannies next to your teeth and in-between the teeth and the gums. If those particles are left in place, they'll quickly start to cause decay.
