Root Canals in Southfield, MI

Infected teeth are painful and unpleasant, but that doesn’t mean the procedure to solve this problem has to follow suit. The professionals at Southfield Family Dental have the solution for all your dental needs, including root canals. Designed to eliminate the pain of an infected tooth, root canals save your teeth, relieve pain, and prevent reinfection. If you’ve experienced damage to your tooth or extensive decay, it may be time to call in the dentists at Southfield to schedule a root canal.

How the Root Canal Process Works

A root canal procedure works by removing the nerve and the pulp of the tooth when severely infected. In order to avoid complete tooth removal, the root canal process is performed in two treatment sessions. During your first appointment, our dentists will take a digital x-ray of your teeth to determine the extent of the damage caused by decay and deterioration. Anesthesia will be applied to the treatment area, and the damaged tooth will be drilled out and cleaned. We’ll then fill the tooth with medicated dental filling material for an added layer of protection before applying a temporary crown.

Your second visit is meant to remove the temporary crown and replace it with a permanent one. This new crown is designed on a mold of your teeth and should last you multiple years before a replacement is required.

Root Canal FAQs

How do I know if I need a root canal?
Root canals are usually required when the pulp, a mass of connective tissue within the tooth's center, is severely damaged or inflamed. Our dentists may recommend a root canal if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:
  • Severe tooth sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Extreme pain when you bite down or chew
  • Additional pain that interferes with eating or sleeping
  • Tooth or gum discoloration
  • Swelling or tenderness in the surrounding gums
If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, we recommend contacting Southfield Family Dental at (248) 569-6304 to schedule a root canal examination.
Is a root canal painful?
Root canals are performed under local anesthesia and are less painful than routine dental procedures like wisdom teeth removals or fillings. You can expect some numbness, soreness, and mild discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after the treatment, as the tissue will still be inflamed.
Does a root canal last forever?
Like any other medical procedure, there is no guarantee your root canal will remain effective for the remainder of your years. Typically you can expect a root canal to last 10 to 15 years before you may require additional dental work.
