Dental Implants - More Than A Nice Smile

If you are missing a tooth or teeth due to injury or disease, dental implants may be the right answer for you. A permanent solution which can last a lifetime, an endosteal or in the bone dental implant is a titanium screw which is placed into the jawbone. The implant acts like an artificial tooth root to hold a crown, bridge or denture in place.

A dental implant can:

  • Fill in the holes in your smile
  • Make eating more comfortable
  • Help boost your confidence
  • Make eating more comfortable
  • Help boost your confidence
  • Improve your appearance and speech
  • Support for a partial denture
  • Increase the stability of full upper or lower dentures

Endosteal or in the bone implants work best in healthy patients. There needs to be adequate bone in the jaw to support the implant; the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. If you are healthy enough for a tooth extraction, it’s more than likely you are healthy enough for a dental implant. In general, when considering dental implants, overall health is a greater consideration than your age. There are a few chronic diseases that may keep you from receiving dental implants; be sure to give a complete medical history when you consult with our dentists in Southfield.

In the event the jaw bone does not have enough height to support an endosteal implant, subperiosteal or on the bone implants may be an option. Subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the jaw bone with the metal framework's posts protruding through the gum to hold the implant in place. This type of implant is used for people who are unable to wear conventional dentures.

Dental implants replace:

· If you are missing a single tooth, one implant with a crown can replace it.

· If you are missing several teeth, implant-supported bridges can replace them.

· If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant-supported full bridge or full denture can replace them.

Dental implants are important. If you are missing teeth, your jaw can shrink and your remaining teeth can shift, your teeth may even start to fall over or lay down. The shrinkage will make you look older; the shifting teeth will cause problems with your bite and the way your teeth come together. Occlusion or bite alignment issues cause pain, tenderness and headaches, eating certain types of foods may become difficult.

Dental implant benefits:

· Improved appearance that dentures and dental bridges don't provide

When an entire tooth and root are missing, there will be shrinking of your jawbone that will cause your face to look older. Dental implants can stop this process; a traditional dental bridge or dentures cannot.

·  Dental implants help preserve your natural teeth

With a traditional bridge, the teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth are ground down and used as anchors for the dental bridge. Healthy teeth are not damaged by the use of dental implants.

· Dental implants are permanent

Dentures and dental bridges are temporary. There are no removable parts with a dental implant so there is no danger of losing or breaking anything; there is no slippage or unnatural movement. The dental implant does not require adjustments like a dental bridge or dentures would.

·  Dental implants are for life

Intended to last a lifetime, dental implants require the same daily care as your natural teeth.  Brushing and flossing at least twice a day; see your dentist every six months for cleaning.

At the Southfield Family Dental Center, endosteal implants start at $499.

A single dental implant can cost much as $1750 in the Metro Detroit area.  Of course, the  cost of a tooth replacement with dental implants is dependent on several factors including the type of implant required, the number of teeth being replaced, the number of dental implants required to support the replacement teeth, the cost of crowns, bridges, partials or dentures.
