What You Need to Know About the Most Common Types of Dental Implants

A dentist explains different dental implant options to a patient. Nature can help you along, but at a certain point it needs some help from dentists and doctors.

A shining smile fits into your self-confidence and ability to eat. Your teeth and oral health work together to serve aesthetic and functional purposes. Whether through injury, gum disease, or some other reason, many people need to get dental implants at some point in their lives. There is a lot of information to consider when deciding how to best support your mouth and oral health through dental implants.

Here at Southfield Family Dental, we believe strongly in dental implants and our $499 dental implant program (there are other costs that go with the full procedure). Keep reading about the different types of dental implants and what you need to know about them to make an informed decision.

What are Dental Implants?

Let’s start with what a dental implant is. Though there are different types, in general, a dental implant replaces a missing tooth or teeth. Sometimes this means surgically placing an anchor post into your jaw while other times your replacement options can rest on your other, healthy teeth. Dental implants are long-term solutions for issues with damaged teeth or gums.

The Question: What kind of Dental Implants?

There are several different types of dental implants. Let’s go through some of your options in the sections below.

Implant-Retained Dentures

Dentures are a removable option for missing teeth. Implant-retained dentures are similar but provide more structure and come closer toward more accurately resembling a natural mouth than their original namesake. This option will include an acrylic base filled with artificial teeth made of resin, porcelain, or other materials to imitate natural coloring. Dentists will surgically place anywhere from four to eight dental implants into your jaw to secure your implant-retained denture.

Single Tooth Implant

Avoid bridges and putting additional strain on neighboring teeth by choosing the single tooth dental implant option. In a single tooth dental implant procedure, your dentist will surgically place an implant into your jaw then affix a cap resembling your missing tooth on top. These replacement teeth won’t decay over time. Also, they have the highest rate at our office for single tooth replacement!

All-on-4 Full-Arch Implant Procedure

If you need help with several teeth, an al-on-4 implant method may be best for you. With this procedure, you won’t have to continue returning to your dentist’s office for additional single tooth replacements. Instead, you can restore an entire impacted arch of teeth in one go. Once your dentist places the implants in your jaw, your top layer of replacement teeth will either snap or screw-on top, returning your beautiful smile.

Implant-Supported Removable Dentures

Another option for you who need to change things up is the implant-supported, removable dentures. This option is similar to the implant-retained denture, however, now you can remove the top portion of your set up. You will still have the metal posts surgically attached to your jaw to create a stable base. As long as you care for your implant-supported removable denture, it will last you a long time.
