How to Be a Better Flosser

Flossing is something that most people have a difficult time keeping up with but knowing how to do it properly may make the frequency of your flossing a little less important. Everyone knows that in order to have a healthy mouth you have to floss but not many people know just how to floss to be the most effective and to get the best clean. Here are three tips to become a better flosser.

  1. Floss Type- the type of floss you use is nearly as important as frequency and technique. You should look for a floss that fits your needs. Often those that have very crowded teeth can benefit from floss that has been coated in wax as it helps the floss to slide between teeth. Those that have teeth that are sensitive may need to look for floss that has no fragrance or flavoring and that is uncoated cotton. Those that have teeth that are spaced further apart can often get away with using just about any type of floss.
  2. Floss At Least Twice a Week- you should try to floss at the very least twice a week. Though the dentist says you should floss every night, flossing a few times a week is a great place to start. Flossing more frequently will cut down on swelling in the gums and in irritation when you do floss as well as bleeding.
  3. Take it Easy- though you may be tempted to rush through flossing and to go as quickly as possible, you should try to floss slowly so that you can get all the plaque and tartar as well as food between your teeth. Going slower is also the best way to avoid gum irritation and to avoid bleeding.
